It’s day 9 of the 31 Days of Mindfulness Challenge and today’s challenge is to take a long walk outside, without distraction.

Day 9: Take a Long Walk Outside, Without Distraction

“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”
— John Muir

There are two paths that I can take from our house when walking the dogs. Either, we go right and walk about half a mile to the highway or we go left and weave around the various backroads and houses. I’ll usually put in my headphones and catch up on a favorite podcast and walk for a few miles, zoning in and out, enjoying the outdoors.

I have to be honest, the idea of walking without anything to listen to doesn’t sound that appealing. But then I remember, pre-knee surgery, back in my running days, I would go out for miles without any music. At first, the idea of running without anything made me break out in a cold sweat but eventually, it became my go-to.

When it comes to mindfulness, you can’t get any better than being outside without anything but your thoughts to distract you. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors while actually being present and fully embracing where you are.

As a Minnesotan in the middle of January, I fully understand this may not be the most ideal time to do this challenge. But practice makes perfect and we’ll be even more grateful for a distraction-free walk come summer 🙂

If you’re joining in, let us know where you enjoyed the outdoors, distraction-free in the comments!

All our best,
