Mindfulness Challenge Day 25: Do Nothing for Five Minutes

It’s day 25 of the 31 Days of Mindfulness Challenge and today’s task is to set a timer for five minutes and just sit.

Day 25: Do Nothing for Five Minutes

“Quiet the mind and the soul will speak.”
— Unknown

When we say do nothing, it doesn’t necessarily mean meditate. The intent isn’t to focus on the breath or clear the mind. Instead, let your mind wander. Let your body be fidgety. The point is to just sit “still” for five whole minutes. And if that sounds a little too challenging, cut it in half – do 2.5 minutes in the morning and 2.5 in the evening.

So, why are we doing this?

I’m willing to bet a majority of us cannot remember the last time we sat down and did absolutely nothing. Usually, we sit and watch TV, scroll on our phone, read a book, eat food, etc. Especially for us chronic multitaskers, the idea of sitting and not doing anything might start to make the palms sweat a bit.

When we force ourselves to stop and enjoy our surroundings, without any expectation, we’re bringing awareness to ourselves and fully stepping into the present moment. There’s nothing to overwhelm us because we aren’t doing anything. There’s nothing to react to because again, we aren’t doing anything.

You can use this time to practice your gratitude, feel those feelings (good or bad) or just enjoy your surroundings. It’s okay if it gets uncomfortable. It’s okay if it’s not the most enjoyable – just try and sit for the entire time.

If you’re joining in, let us know how it went in the comments!

All our best,
