It’s day 24 of the 31 Days of Mindfulness Challenge and today’s task is to focus on the present and stop scrolling mindlessly on social media.

Day 24: Say No to the Mindless Social Media Scroll

How could we do a mindfulness challenge and NOT include anything about social media?

As a blogger and business owner, being on social media is kind of my job. However, I have been known to hop on and partake in the mindless scroll one too many times throughout the day. I log in, check notifications and then scroll to see what I’ve missed. Before I know it, fifteen minutes have gone by and I have consumed absolutely nothing that adds value to my life.

If you’re able, I would challenge you to log out of social entirely for the day. You may find yourself spending time on more worthwhile things like reading, talking to actual humans, taking a bath, playing a game or picking up that new hobby you tried out a few days ago 😛

If saying no for an entire day isn’t your thing, try being mindful of the time you do spend checking your phone and scrolling through the channels. Are you being intentional with what you’re looking for or are you zoning out until something catches your eye? When you go on autopilot, you say goodbye to the present moment and your awareness. The good news is, once you notice yourself doing the mindless scroll, you’re back in awareness. At that moment, either put your phone away or find what you’re looking for.

Being intentional with social media may open your eyes to how much time you’re mindlessly spending on Facebook or Instagram. At the end of the day, remember social media is for being social – not for escaping the present moment.
