It’s day 21 of the 31 Days of Mindfulness Challenge and today’s task is to say no to multitasking.
Day 21: Say No to Multitasking
“Doing one thing mindfully is the new multitasking. Get everything done with the attention is deserves. It will all get done.” — Unknown
There’s a common school of thought that says multitasking is a badge of honor. That having the ability to do multiple things at once somehow makes us more efficient, better at our jobs, better at managing the day-to-day activities, etc. In fact, if I remember correctly, my ability to multitask was a question in pretty much every job I interviewed for – I would proudly state that I could multitask with the best of them.
What if this notion of multitasking is a myth? That when we try to do many things at one, our productivity takes a nose dive and it actually takes us MORE time to complete said activities?
Moms, I see you shaking your head. Multitasking is your survival mechanism – how else are you supposed to get all the kiddos out the door while simultaneously putting dinner in the crockpot, cleaning up the kitchen AND getting yourself ready for work?
But.
But what if we brought mindfulness into play and focused our attention 100% on the task at hand – would it be easier to complete? Would we get said task done faster?
Today’s challenge is to focus on one thing and one thing only. It’s about bringing your full attention to what you’re doing – being present in the moment. When we force our focus on one thing, our mind cannot wander to the million other items on the list.
As a chronic multitasker, today is going to be a tough one for me and I imagine I’m not the only one. Good luck!
If you’re joining in, let us know how your no-multitasking day went in the comments!
All our best,
