It’s day 17 of the 31 Days of Mindfulness Challenge and today’s task is to bring awareness to yourself and your body throughout the day.
Day 17: Be Aware of Your Body Throughout the Day

In day ten we talked about bringing awareness to your thoughts. Today’s task is similar except our focus and awareness is directed to our body.
When I started meditating this past summer, a common practice is to bring awareness to the fact that you’re sitting or laying down – the meditation will guide you through becoming aware of your feet against the floor, your butt sitting on the chair, your back against the chair; every touch point a body part comes in contact with another object. The point is to bring awareness to that specific feeling.
Prior to meditating, I hadn’t ever given much thought to those subtleties, like the way my feet feel when they’re resting on the ground. We tend to go on autopilot throughout the day and thinking about the way our body feels throughout the day probably isn’t something that’s at the top of our mind… unless there’s discomfort.
The challenge, then, is to bring awareness to your body throughout the day, even when there isn’t any uneasy feeling. For example, when you’re typing an email, bring awareness to the feeling of your fingers on the keyboard. Or, if you’re reading a book, when was the last time you took note of the texture of the pages? This doesn’t have to be anything dramatic – just bring awareness to the often-overlooked distinctions throughout the day.
