It’s day 15 of the 31 Days of Mindfulness Challenge and today’s task is to show gratitude and appreciation for the loved ones in your life.
Day 15: Write Letters of Appreciation to Loved Ones
“Appreciation is a wonderful thing: it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.”
I’m excited for today’s challenge because similar to day six, it’s all about gratitude.
Let me start by asking: when was the last time you truly showed your appreciation for a loved one? Not a quick ‘thank you’ as you passed by or a short text to say ‘I love you’ but a real expression of appreciation for that person. For me, I’m embarrassed to admit it’s been way too long.
Today, take thirty minutes (or maybe an hour) out of your day, sit down and write a letter of appreciation to a handful of loved ones in your life. Like the five minute gratitude practice, when we really think about what we’re grateful for, we’re forcing awareness and being mindful of our present moment.
And if you want to take it one step further, I’d encourage you to actually send those letters. First, who doesn’t love getting a letter in the mail? Second, take a moment and think about how much joy that person will experience by getting a surprise letter filled with all the reasons why they’re so amazing? And finally, this simple act does wonders for your own mental health and of course, will strengthen your relationship with that person.
