Industrial home decor.
It’s the one style that both Brett and I agree on unanimously.
And when we find something we agree on, we run with it. I mean full on, sprint to the finish line and don’t look back kind of ‘run with it.’
This love affair started with the living room side tables. They’re darker stained with black metal accents on the corners. Brett really liked them and I was slap happy because I actually made a table that didn’t wobble.
Then we started talking about the guest bathroom and found these great wall mount lights with an industrial-style feel to them.
Then I made an industrial pipe curtain rod for the guest bedroom and we haven’t looked back since.
Ladies and gentlemen, we’re in this one for the long haul and I couldn’t be happier.
And the first project we’re sharing since making the big ‘official’ declaration?
Tutorial: How to Make a wood plank & industrial pipe table
To make the top, screw together four pieces of 2×6 together using a Kreg Jig.
disclaimer: We were a touch off on the industrial piping width, so the picture above shows three pieces of wood and the finished product had four. I wanted the table to be long and skinny and even after going back to the store to buy shorter pipes, the legs were still too wide and Brett assured me all would be okay. [he may have been right, but shhh, don’t tell him]
The top was sanded down and the corners were rounded off using 80 grit sand paper and our trusty orbital sander.
I wanted the wood to have a little wear and tear so I asked Brett if we had any chains laying around. Luckily we did and after putting on some gloves (safety first!) I whacked the wood in random places, leaving random indentations and dents.
Aside: this part was definitely my favorite and most fun.
Then we put together the bottom.
The biggest challenge we faced was making sure each segment was screwed in evenly on all four sides.
After getting the bottom together, we then spray painted it flat black.
Finally, we screwed the bottom to the top, making sure it was evenly spaced on all four corners. Then we flipped it over and gave it the ole’ wobble test. After passing with flying colors, we added a few knick-knacks and called it a day.
Even with a few unplanned trips to the store, the whole project only took a day to complete. Best of all? It’s fueled our industrial love affair even more.
All our best,
This looks so amazing Kelly! I have been wanting to make one for so long but always thought it might be too complicated. You guys made it sound so easy and it looks so wonderful. Great job!!
Thank you, Sabrina! It wasn’t complicated at all – super easy! You should definitely add it to your project list ?
Where did you get your metal piping and for how much?
Hi! I got the piping at a local home improvement store called Menards and I believe it was about $50 for everything. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Could this be made bigger, such as into a dining room table?
Hi Kalia!
Yes, definitely! I would just add another plank to either [or both] sides and extend your piping. I might also suggest putting some 2x4s or similar, secured to all the boards horizontally to add extra support.
Good luck!
