2020 Renovation Plans

Renovations

20 Jan

We’re closing in on the start of year four of the home renovation.

Four. Years.

Where in the hell did time go?

It seems like just yesterday we were scraping popcorn off the ceilings and knocking down the main divider wall between the mother-in-law suite and the rest of the house.

Fast forward to 2020 and we’re in the middle of a kitchen renovation and planning on finally covering the subfloor with real tile!

But, I’m getting ahead of myself – today we’re walking through all the plans we have for this year. And dare I say, we may actually be crossing the finish line of floor one in 2020?!

#1 Finish the Kitchen Renovation

Demo-day of the kitchen island commenced at the end of December and it’s been full steam ahead on this renovation. I’m a little behind with blog posts (full kitchen plans coming soon!) but the plan is to give the kitchen a complete overhaul. We’ve torn out the floor and kitchen island. We’re in the process of building a custom island (just paint and doors are left!), have ordered new cabinets and appliances and will be installing new tile and backsplash. I’ve yet to decide on new lighting and I’m hoping to talk Brett into building us a farmhouse kitchen table – but pretty much anything in the kitchen space will be getting a makeover.

#2 Install the new windows and sliding door in the kitchen

Not only is the kitchen itself getting a makeover but we’re also hoping to install a new sliding door and windows. If we can check that off the list, we’ll have nearly completed updating all the windows on floor one. All that’s left is the west side of the house (one at the bottom of the stairs, one in our master bedroom and one in the master bathroom).

We’re still working through the layout of the new windows and sliding door but the regardless of the plan, the goal is to get rid of the old ones and swap in something new!

#3 Finish the living room

The original owner (and the one who built the house) apparently didn’t believe in overhead lighting – none of the rooms had any. So, the first order of business in the living room will be to install overhead lighting and a fan. Then, we’ll be able to finally put up the rest of the drywall and finish off the entire space.

#4 Install flooring on the first floor

Going hand-and-hand with finishing the living room is installing floor. We’ve decided on wood tile for the first floor, minus the kitchen. I think it’s still up in the air whether or not we’ll rip up the plywood flooring in the office or guest bedroom but the hallway, second guest bedroom and living room will get the new tile.

#5 Install interior doors in laundry room, linen closet and guest bedrooms

We’re moving up in the world and hope to finally get interior doors installed. This involves purchasing said doors and staining them. I’d also love to swap in some new hardware on the existing bathroom door – black handles to match the hardware on our exterior doors.

#6 Finish organizing the garage

Whew, this one is a doozy. The garage, while finished, has been a drop zone for everything. Brett has been slowly working away at organizing and it’s nearly complete – just waiting on some storage that should have been shipped to us December 15. Only a tad late 😛

#7 Finish the stair banister

Friends, I am so excited for this one. After we install our floor, it’ll be time to install a solid banister (goodbye 2x4s!). We’re thinking a mixture between rustic and industrial (of course) with black rods and rustic wood.

#8 Finish the linen closet

This is once again on the to-do list and hopefully we’ll have better luck than last year! Although it’s not a huge project, it’s one of those things that is easy to put on the back burner. Also, we’re currently in a debate about what style to use. I’m team white shiplap and wood shelves, Brett wants plain walls and shelves, similar to the office or pantry closet. I know you’re on the edge of your seat with this one, friends 😛

As with every year before, I’m wondering if we’ve tasked ourselves with a little much. But then again, we’re still riding high from kicking ass in 2019 and I think, maybe, just maybe, we’ll cross off everything on the list!

Cheers to a fun filled 2020 – we’re so thankful you’re following along!

All our best,
