Rustic Buffalo Check Holiday Tablescape

8 holiday tablescape ideas

You know that feeling when you’re jeans shopping and the latest trend is the high waisted style so that’s all you try on but can only think of your mom in the 80’s and how you used to make fun of her for wearing jeans that went up to her belly button?

And then.

And then you try on a perfect pair of bootcut jeans that sit at normal hip level and they make you look ten pounds thinner and feel like you could dominate the world?

Well, I feel like the past two years we’ve been trying to fit into the high waisted jeans and it just wasn’t working.

If you scroll through your Instagram feed, it’s easy to see that all-white-everything is on trend and looks oh so pretty in picutres. It’s also exactly what I wanted when we first moved in.

Thankfully [and much to my frustration in those early days], Brett put his foot down and fought tooth and nail for natural wood and darker colors.

Although I will never admit this to his face, I’m glad he pushed back.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I still give all the heart eyes to the beautiful white decor. But when it comes to what’s best for us and our family, I know that shit isn’t going to fly. There’d be muddy pawprints, black hair and a few food stains on the couch/blanket/chair/whatever in a matter of minutes.

Which brings me to today’s rustic buffalo check holiday tablescape.

It’s woodsy and dark. It’s thrifted and inexpensive. It’s all about natural elements, galvanized accents and buffalo check.

It’s our bootcut jean.

Let’s start with the chairs. They used to be gray and then I got the itch to go darker and spent a weekend spray painting them a matte black. Brett got a nice surprise when he came home from a hunting trip and we’re both pretty happy with the change πŸ™‚

I made the table runner from fabric I got a JoAnns for 50% off [score!] and picked up the woven chargers at Kohl’s with some Kohl’s cash I had on hand.

The silver plates were from the dollar store and originally gold. I wanted a little moreΒ  contrast against the woven charger so I spray painted them with this pretty metallic paint.

The birch slices were left over from the wedding and are the perfect home for a dollar store candle and deer antler.

The galvanized buckets were picked up at Hobby Lobby during one of their 50% off sales; I think they were around $4.00 a piece.

The ‘trees’ are actually two everygreen stems wound together – also picked up at Hobby Lobby when they had all their Christmas decor 60% off. I put in a few pieces of floral foam, stuck the stems in and then filled the buckets with pinecones to help stabalize the branches.

To finish off the table, I added the black candlesticks featured in our summer tablescape and sprinkled a few more pinecones along the table runner…because you really can’t have too many, right?

  1. I love the rustic quality to your tablescape! It has such a “North Country” feel to it. This just goes to show, with a little creativity and some elbow grease you can have a great table.

  2. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful tablescape. Every element is perfect and compliments the others. The chargers are EXACTLY what I have been looking for. Thanks for the tips. Your handmade runner is SO perfect for your style.
Thanks for all your work to host this blog hop.
    Merry Christmas.

  3. Love love love the navy and teal table runner. Also have all the heart eyes for the pieces of wood under those sweet little trees. The whole space is simply fabulous! Thanks so much for organizing this hop! You’re the best. Happy holidays to you and yours! ~~ Susie from The Chelsea Project

  4. This is so great! Totally hits home. The all-white is so “in” right now and looks great in pictures, but just doesn’t hold up super well in reality. I love that you went with what works for you guys despite what’s popular … definitely a fan of the more traditional rustic look you’ve got going on.
And, on a totally different note, thanks so much for hosting this hop!

Hope you have a merry Christmas!
